• WMATA returned to Orion Bus Industries for 40-foot bus purchases in 1997 after the demise of the Flxible Corporation. At 213 units, this is one of WMATA's largest order of buses. These series of buses are powered by the Detroit Diesel Series 50 engine and the Allison B400R5 5-speed transmission. WMATA began rehabilitating these units in 2003, and only a small batch of these units remain unrehabbed. The Luminator Horizon LED signs were installed as a project separate from the rehabilitation program. They replaced the Vultron flip dots which were plagued with technical problems.
